Abstract: It is now well-accepted that early childhood education has been challenged by a theoretical seachange that has seen individualistic developmental explanations of learning and development replaced by theories that foreground the cultural and socially constructed nature of learning. Terminology and understandings from these socio-cultural perspectives have entered the professional language of early childhood education and are now part of the knowledge base that underpins early childhood practice. Early Childhood Education: Society and Culture aims to address a need for literature that develops basic explanations of socio-cultural theories of learning in early childhood settings.
